Radiesse in Mallorca: The Biostimulator That Tightens and Restores Volume

Volume loss is one of the most common concerns we hear at MD Aesthetics in Mallorca. As we age — and especially when we live under the Mediterranean sun — the face gradually loses the fat pads, bone density, and collagen that once kept it looking full and defined. The cheeks flatten, the jawline softens, and lines deepen around the mouth.

Radiesse offers something that few treatments can: immediate volumisation on the day of treatment, combined with long-term collagen and elastin stimulation that continues to improve skin quality for months afterwards. It is a true dual-action biostimulator, and one of the most versatile tools in modern aesthetic medicine.

Understanding Radiesse

Radiesse is an injectable biostimulator made from calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in an aqueous gel carrier. Calcium hydroxyapatite is a mineral that occurs naturally in human bones and teeth, which makes Radiesse highly biocompatible — the body recognises it and works with it rather than against it.

When injected, the gel carrier provides instant volume and lift. Over the following weeks, the CaHA microspheres act as a scaffold that stimulates your fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. As the microspheres are gradually metabolised by the body (typically over 12–18 months), they leave behind a framework of your own newly generated tissue.

The result is twofold: you walk out of the clinic with visible improvement, and that improvement continues to build and refine itself over the months that follow.

The Dual-Action Mechanism

What sets Radiesse apart from most injectables is this two-phase approach:

  1. Phase one — Immediate correction: The CaHA gel provides structural support and volume from the moment it is injected. This is particularly effective for restoring projection in the cheeks, defining the jawline, and smoothing deep folds.

  2. Phase two — Neocollagenesis and neoelastogenesis: Over the following 3–6 months, the CaHA microspheres stimulate the production of both new collagen (types I and III) and new elastin fibres. This is what gives Radiesse its skin-tightening effect — not just volume, but genuine improvement in skin firmness and elasticity.

Research published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology has demonstrated that CaHA stimulates significant increases in collagen and elastin production, with measurable improvements in skin thickness and elasticity that persist well beyond the life of the product itself.

Radiesse and the Mallorca Lifestyle

Mallorca's climate is one of its greatest assets — but for your skin, over 300 days of annual sunshine comes at a cost. Chronic UV exposure accelerates the breakdown of both collagen and elastin, the two proteins responsible for keeping skin firm, tight, and volumised. This process, known as photoageing, is why many residents and regular visitors notice volume loss and skin laxity earlier than they might expect.

Radiesse is particularly well-suited to this environment because it addresses both consequences of photoageing simultaneously: it replaces lost volume and stimulates the production of new structural proteins. For patients who spend their lives outdoors — sailing, hiking, or simply enjoying terrace lunches in Palma — Radiesse helps counteract the cumulative effects of that sun-filled lifestyle.

Combined with consistent SPF use and a targeted skincare regimen, Radiesse forms a powerful cornerstone of any long-term rejuvenation strategy in a sunny climate.

Treatment Areas

Radiesse is remarkably versatile. At MD Aesthetics, we use it to treat a wide range of facial and non-facial concerns:

Face

  • Cheeks and midface: Restoring volume and projection for a naturally lifted appearance.

  • Jawline: Sharpening and defining the jaw contour, particularly effective for early jowling.

  • Nasolabial folds: Smoothing the deep creases between the nose and mouth.

  • Marionette lines: Softening the lines that run from the corners of the mouth to the chin.

  • Chin: Adding projection and balance to the lower face profile.

  • Temples: Filling hollow temples that create a gaunt, aged appearance.

Beyond the face

When Radiesse is diluted (a technique known as hyperdilute Radiesse), it can be used as a skin-tightening biostimulator across larger body areas:

  • Hands: Restoring volume to the back of the hands, where visible tendons and veins are a telltale sign of ageing.

  • Neck and décolletage: Improving skin quality and reducing crepiness in areas that are notoriously difficult to treat.

  • Arms and knees: Tightening loose, thinning skin in areas exposed to sun damage over the years.

Radiesse vs. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Patients often ask how Radiesse compares to hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, which remain the most widely used injectables in aesthetics. Both are excellent tools, but they serve different purposes:

Radiesse (CaHA)

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Active ingredient

Calcium hydroxyapatite

Hyaluronic acid

Mechanism

Volume + collagen/elastin stimulation

Volume + hydration

Results

Immediate + progressive improvement

Immediate

Duration

12–18 months (effects may last longer)

6–18 months

Best for

Structure, lift, skin tightening

Lips, tear troughs, fine lines

Reversible

No (naturally metabolised)

Yes (with hyaluronidase)

At MD Aesthetics, we frequently combine Radiesse with HA fillers in the same treatment session. Radiesse provides the structural foundation — the scaffolding — while HA fillers add the finishing touches in areas that require softer, more precise volume.

Radiesse and Sculptra: Choosing the Right Biostimulator

Both Radiesse and Sculptra are classified as biostimulators, but they work differently and suit different patient needs. While Sculptra (Poly-L-Lactic Acid) produces results entirely through gradual collagen stimulation over multiple sessions, Radiesse delivers immediate correction on day one alongside its biostimulatory effects.

For patients who want visible improvement straight away combined with ongoing skin-quality enhancement, Radiesse is often the preferred option. For those who prioritise a very gradual, subtle transformation and are comfortable waiting several months for full results, Sculptra may be more appropriate. We explore this in more detail in our guide to Sculptra and how it works.

In many cases, the best approach is a combination of both — something our medical team can advise on during your consultation.

Your Treatment Experience

During treatment

A Radiesse session typically takes 30–45 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated. The product contains integrated lidocaine, so discomfort is minimal. Your doctor may also apply a topical anaesthetic cream beforehand for additional comfort.

Radiesse is injected using a fine needle or blunt-tip cannula into the deep dermis or subcutaneous tissue. The technique is precise and tailored to your facial anatomy — the goal is always to enhance your natural features, never to create an artificial look.

After treatment

You will see an immediate improvement in volume and contour. Mild swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites is normal and typically resolves within 2–5 days. Most patients return to their normal activities the same day or the following morning.

Over the next 3–6 months, you will notice a progressive improvement in skin firmness and tightness as collagen and elastin production builds. Many of our patients describe this as their skin feeling “stronger” and looking healthier overall — not just in the injected areas.

Number of Sessions and Expected Results

Unlike some biostimulators that require multiple sessions before results become visible, Radiesse delivers noticeable results from the first treatment. Many patients achieve their desired outcome in a single session, though some may benefit from a follow-up treatment 4–8 weeks later to fine-tune the result.

For hyperdilute Radiesse used as a skin-tightening treatment (neck, hands, décolletage), a course of 2–3 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart typically delivers the best results.

Results last approximately 12–18 months, though the collagen and elastin generated during treatment can continue to provide structural benefit beyond this timeframe. A single annual maintenance session is usually sufficient to preserve and extend your results.

Safety Profile

Radiesse has been used in aesthetic medicine for over 15 years and holds approvals from the European Medicines Agency and the FDA. Its safety profile is well-established, with extensive clinical data supporting its use across a range of indications.

The most common side effects are mild and short-lived:

  • Swelling and redness (2–5 days)

  • Bruising (up to 1–2 weeks)

  • Tenderness at injection sites

Serious complications are rare when Radiesse is administered by qualified medical professionals using proper technique. At MD Aesthetics, every treatment is performed by our experienced medical team in a clinical setting, following all recommended safety protocols and using only genuine, CE-marked products.

Radiesse is not recommended for use in the lips or in very superficial planes of the skin. It is also not suitable for patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a known allergy to any component of the product.

The Ideal Candidate

Radiesse is an excellent choice for patients who are experiencing:

  • Loss of facial volume, particularly in the cheeks, temples, or jawline

  • A desire for both immediate results and long-term skin improvement

  • Early to moderate skin laxity and reduced firmness

  • Visible ageing on the hands, neck, or décolletage

  • Previous experience with HA fillers who want longer-lasting, more structural results

Radiesse works well across all skin types and tones, and is equally effective for both women and men seeking natural-looking rejuvenation.
