What are dermal fillers used for?

Dermal fillers, as the names suggests, are injectable products used to fill or add volume to various areas of the face and body. The most popular dermal filler on the market is hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring molecule and the filler of choice at M.D. Aesthetics because of its excellent safety profile, reversibility and the beautiful results it gives.

What are soft tissue fillers?

Fillers are generally used to improve facial contour and add definition as well as to reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. We can also inject fillers to restore age-related loss of volume and lift sagging skin to rejuvenate the patient's appearance. One of the most common filler procedures are done on the lips and here the aim of hyaluronic acid is to plump, contour and hydrate, as well as to increase their vertical height using the so-called ''Russian lips'' technique. In patients who suffer from noticeable eye-hollows, dermal fillers can be used soften them and give the eyes a ''fresh'' appearance.ā€‹

What are the possible side effects?

All our procedures are performed by medical doctors who are trained to deal with potential complications and use techniques to minimise the risk of their occurence in the first place. As with any medical procedure, there are some possible side effects of injecting dermal fillers which patients must be aware of before deciding to have the procedure. These include:

  • Nodule formation - these can be simple collections of filler which can be physically removed or dissolved with hyaluronidase, or delayed-onset nodules which often have an unknown underlying cause and which may or may not resolve completely with treatment.

  • Infection - all procedures we perform are done under aseptic conditions to reduce the risk of infection to a minimum. However, bacteria can be transferred onto the injection site through touching the skin with unclean hands or applying makeup after the procedure so it is essential not to touch the skin, apply any cosmetics or apply make-up for 24 hours after the appointment. If an infection does occur, antibiotics can be prescribed to clear it.

  • Inflammatory reactions

  • Swelling and bruising

  • Vascular occlusion - in very rare case scenarios the filler may be accidentally injected into a blood vessel causing a blockage. In order to avoid this, we perform aspiration and inject very small quantities of filler at a time in a slow and careful manner, constantly inspecting the patient for signs of an occlusion. If a vascular occlusion happens the doctor will immediately apply hyaluronidase in order to dissolve the filler and restore blood flow.

What to expect during the procedure?

You will be asked to come to the appointment without any makeup on and your skin will be cleaned with a special antibacterial solution to minimise the risk of infection. For your peace of mind you will be shown the brand new box of filler and its use-by-date so that you know exactly what is being used for your treatment. The doctor will numb your skin either by applying an anaesthetic cream or injecting a local anaesthetic into the area, so that your treatment is as comfortable as possible. The filler will be injected very slowly and using a technique that respects your facial anatomy. This is to avoid causing bruising or inadvertently injecting the filler into a blood vessel. After the procedure the doctor will explain what you should do in respect to the after-care and will bring your attention to signs and symptoms of potential complications to ensure that you know when you should contact us.
