Microneedling in Mallorca: Why Collagen Induction Therapy Is Your Skin's Best Investment

If there is one treatment that consistently delivers results across almost every skin concern — fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven texture, acne scars, pigmentation, dullness — it is microneedling. Unlike treatments that sit on top of the skin or temporarily mask imperfections, microneedling works with your body's own biology to rebuild skin from the inside out.
At MD Aesthetics in Mallorca, microneedling is one of the most requested treatments in our clinic, and for good reason. It is minimally invasive, suitable for virtually every skin type and tone, and the results — firmer, smoother, healthier-looking skin — continue to improve for months after the session. In this guide we explain exactly how collagen induction therapy works, who it is for, and why late spring and post-summer are the ideal windows to book it.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT), is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a medical-grade device fitted with very fine, sterile needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the upper layers of the skin. These micro-injuries are so small they are invisible to the eye, but they are deep enough to trigger a powerful natural healing response.
That healing response is the whole point. When the skin detects these micro-channels, it activates its wound-repair cascade: growth factors are released, fibroblasts are recruited, and new collagen and elastin are produced to rebuild the treated area. The result is not a filler or a camouflage — it is genuinely new, stronger, better-organised tissue.
According to DermNet, microneedling has become one of the most versatile tools in modern dermatology precisely because of this mechanism: it treats the cause of skin ageing and damage rather than just the symptoms.
The Science of Collagen Induction
To understand why microneedling is so effective, it helps to understand what happens in the skin during and after treatment:
Controlled micro-injury: The device creates precise micro-channels in the dermis. Because the injury is controlled and uniform, the healing response is predictable and strong.
Inflammation phase: In the first 24–48 hours, platelets release growth factors (PDGF, TGF-β, VEGF) that signal the skin to begin repair.
Proliferation phase: Fibroblasts migrate to the area and start producing new collagen (predominantly type III, which matures into type I) and new elastin fibres.
Remodelling phase: Over the following 3–6 months, the new collagen reorganises into a denser, more orderly network. This is when most of the visible improvement appears.
A comprehensive review published on NCBI confirms that microneedling produces measurable increases in collagen density and improvements in skin texture, with clinical benefits demonstrated across acne scarring, photoageing, stretch marks, and general skin rejuvenation.
Downtime is short and the treatment is safe for all skin tones, including darker phototypes that carry a higher risk of pigmentation with more aggressive resurfacing.
What Microneedling Can Treat
One of the reasons we use microneedling so frequently at MD Aesthetics is its remarkable range of indications. A single protocol can address concerns that would otherwise require several different treatments:
Fine lines and early wrinkles — particularly around the eyes, mouth and forehead.
Loss of firmness and early skin laxity — by rebuilding the collagen scaffolding.
Enlarged pores — tightening the skin around follicular openings.
Uneven skin texture — smoothing the surface and restoring a refined finish.
Acne scars — especially rolling and shallow boxcar scars, where microneedling is considered a gold-standard non-laser option.
Stretch marks — on the abdomen, thighs, hips and arms.
Dullness and lacklustre tone — improving circulation and skin-cell turnover.
Sun-induced pigmentation and photoageing — particularly relevant for skin chronically exposed to the Mediterranean sun.
Because the treatment is customisable, needle depth and device settings are adjusted to the concern being treated and the area of the face or body. Finer, more superficial passes address texture and pores; deeper protocols are used for acne scarring and stretch marks.
Microneedling and the Mallorca Climate
Living in Mallorca is a privilege — but the island's 300+ days of annual sunshine put the skin under constant pressure. UV radiation is the single biggest driver of premature skin ageing: it breaks down existing collagen and elastin, triggers pigmentation, and thickens the outer layer of the skin in an uneven way.
Microneedling is particularly valuable in this environment because it addresses photoageing at its structural root. By stimulating the production of fresh collagen and elastin, it helps replenish what the sun has quietly depleted over years of outdoor living.
Timing matters, though. Because the skin is temporarily more sensitive to UV after treatment, we generally recommend planning your microneedling sessions for late spring, autumn or winter — and especially in the post-summer months, when many of our patients come in to recover and repair after a season of beach days, sailing, and terrace lunches in Palma. September to April is the sweet spot for a full microneedling protocol in Mallorca.
Consistent use of a high-quality broad-spectrum SPF before, during and after the treatment cycle is non-negotiable. We provide specific aftercare guidance so you can get the best possible results without compromising them at the beach.
Your Microneedling Session at MD Aesthetics
Before the treatment
Every microneedling journey at MD Aesthetics starts with a medical consultation. Our team assesses your skin, discusses your goals, and designs a protocol tailored to your concerns, skin type and lifestyle. We may recommend preparing the skin with a dedicated homecare routine (vitamin C, retinoids, specific actives) in the weeks leading up to your first session.
During the treatment
On the day of treatment, the skin is thoroughly cleansed and a topical anaesthetic cream is applied for approximately 20–30 minutes, so the procedure is comfortable. The actual microneedling usually takes 20–30 minutes, depending on the area being treated.
We use a medical-grade motorised device with single-use sterile tips. Needle depth is adjusted across different facial zones — gentler around the eyes and forehead, deeper on the cheeks and areas with scarring. Many of our protocols also incorporate targeted serums, peptides or mesotherapy solutions during or immediately after the treatment, so the active ingredients can penetrate through the fresh micro-channels and amplify results.
After the treatment
Your skin will look pink, a little flushed, and feel warm — similar to a mild sunburn. This typically settles within 24–48 hours. Some patients experience slight tightness or very fine flaking on days 2 and 3 as the skin renews itself.
Most patients return to work the following day, though we recommend avoiding makeup for 24 hours, as well as intense exercise, saunas, and direct sun exposure for several days after treatment.
Results and Treatment Plan
Microneedling is a cumulative treatment. You will notice an immediate glow in the week following your first session, but the real structural improvement unfolds over the following months as new collagen is laid down and remodelled.
General rejuvenation and skin quality: a course of 3–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
Acne scars and stretch marks: 4–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with more significant improvement visible from the second or third session onwards.
Maintenance: 2–4 sessions per year to preserve and extend your results.
Final results are typically evaluated 3 to 6 months after the last session of the initial course — this is when the new collagen has fully matured.
Combining Microneedling with Other Treatments
Some of the best results we see at MD Aesthetics come from thoughtfully combining microneedling with other treatments that target different layers and mechanisms of the skin. This layered approach is especially effective for patients dealing with the combined effects of sun exposure, volume loss and textural damage.
A particularly powerful pairing is microneedling with a biostimulator. While microneedling triggers collagen production through mechanical stimulation, biostimulators such as Sculptra work chemically, signalling the fibroblasts to produce collagen over many months. Used in complementary protocols, they can deliver a more complete and longer-lasting improvement in skin firmness and quality. You can read more about how biostimulators work in our guide to Sculptra and collagen stimulation.
Microneedling also pairs well with medical-grade peels, targeted mesotherapy, and non-ablative laser protocols. Your treatment plan is always designed around your skin — never around a fixed protocol.
Safety and Who Should Avoid It
When performed by a qualified medical team using sterile, single-use tips and medical-grade devices, microneedling has an excellent safety profile. Side effects are usually limited to temporary redness, mild swelling and occasional light pinpoint bleeding on the day of treatment.
However, microneedling is not recommended for patients with:
Active acne, cold sores or other skin infections in the treatment area
Active eczema, psoriasis or rosacea flare-ups in the treatment area
A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
Recent use of isotretinoin (within the past 6 months, depending on the case)
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Uncontrolled diabetes or certain autoimmune conditions
Your suitability is always assessed during the consultation. At MD Aesthetics every treatment is carried out in a medical setting by our trained team, using CE-marked devices and following strict hygiene protocols — this is not a treatment to improvise at home.
The Ideal Candidate
Microneedling is an excellent choice for patients who:
Want to improve overall skin quality — texture, firmness, pores, and radiance
Are starting to notice early signs of ageing and want to act preventatively
Have acne scars, stretch marks or fine pigmentation they would like to soften
Prefer a minimally invasive treatment with short downtime
Have darker skin tones and are looking for a safe alternative to ablative lasers
Want to invest in their skin as part of a long-term rejuvenation plan rather than a quick fix
In short, microneedling is one of the few treatments that almost any adult interested in looking after their skin can benefit from — provided it is carried out by professionals, with the right protocol, at the right time of year.
